As Stevenage New Town expanded new scout groups opened to support the young people moving into the growing areas. By the 1980’s there were two groups in the Pin Green area, Fairlands at Webb Rise and Trotts Hill at Martinswood.
In 1992 both groups were struggling without a full complement of sections or leaders and the decision was made by the District Commissioner to amalgamate the two groups and Pin Green Scout Group was formed in January 1993. From that incentive the group went from strength to strength with two Beaver colonies, two Cub packs and two Scout groups, but still running on two sites at Hampson Park Play Centre and Martinswood School. At times accommodation has been a challenge and circumstances have meant that we have had to find alternative accommodation at short notice. With a change of Headteacher in 2001 we moved from Martinswood School to Chells Manor Community Centre. In 2004 it was felt the rented halls were not suitable for a thriving scout group and Stevenage District offered us the vacant scout hut at Tatlers Lane, this was ideal for scouts but a little far out for Cubs and Beavers. In 2010 when Hampson Park Pavilion became unusable we needed to find new accommodation at short notice and the Church Hall at Cuttys Lane became the new venue.
Over the years we have had strong team of leaders, some only for a short term and others who have stayed the course. We have always worked together across all sections which has enabled us to take part in a wide range of activities and camps, including District and County events and as part of the District support team. Several of our young people went on to be selected for international jamborees or have gone on to be leaders.
Following recent national circumstances we are slowly rebuilding our membership and look forward to all the enjoyable scouting activities for the members to be part of.
